Well water is often used to fill swimming pools because it is free. Before filling the pool with it, we should know that it can cause us a lot of headaches.
Very often, well water contains large amounts of metal ions, mainly iron ions, which react negatively to the chlorine products used to disinfect the pool water.
After you have filled the pool with well water, it is very likely that it will turn brown after a few days. In the worst case, stains may remain on the inner lining of the pool.
Therefore, before filling the pool with well water, you should test whether it contains metals. This is done as follows: fill a clean and white plastic bucket with well water and put 10 g of chlorine granules in it. If there are metals in the water, it will turn brown after one to two hours.
If the color is green – the water contains a small amount of metals
If the color is brown – the water contains a large amount of metals
If the color is black – the water contains manganese
For pools with a cartridge filter, the only solution is to fill the pool with water from the water supply.
For pools with a sand filter, the solution is to treat the water with a special preparation that removes the metals contained in the water, without having to empty the pool.
The residual amounts of metals in the water are removed with a coagulant and abundant washings of the sand filter.
If you think that these procedures are too detailed for you, consider whether it would not be better to fill the pool with water from the water supply from the very beginning.
